Wasps

We have many different types of wasps in the Canberra region, most are pests to humans when they decide to nest on your property. The main types of wasps commonly found are the European wasp and the Paper wasp.

European Wasps

European wasps are an aggressive stinging insect and are now the largest pest species we have in the region. They will nest in wall cavities, subfloor, roof voids of buildings, in the ground and behind retaining walls, and on occasion amongst large plants.

Identification

European wasps can be identified by their size, which is between 12–16mm. They are bright yellow with a black banded abdomen and a pair of black spots on each yellow band.

Locating a Nest

Most European wasp nests contain between 5,000 and 7,000 wasps, but can also become super nests with up to 100,000 wasps. Most nests will be hidden but you will see a constant stream of wasps entering and leaving the nest.

Paper Wasps

Asian paper wasps have a small head, with medium-sized eyes and medium length antennae. The body of the paper wasp is reddish-brown to black, slender with long, bright yellow legs and a very narrow waist. They have reddish amber-brown wings, and their abdomen is reddish-brown with yellow rings. The Asian paper wasp grows between 13– 25mm in length. They can sting multiple times and are very painful.

Nests

Paper wasp nests are normally grey and full of small cells containing the larvae. They are most commonly seen hanging under tree branches and building eaves.
